The Qbisys Storage Server QSS-3000 Series incorporates the latest in
data storage packaging with the data protection and performance of a
hardware cache RAID solution.
The QSS-3000 Series provides the flexibility,
scalability, data protection and performance required in many of today¡¯s
server environments. The product family is a state-of-the-art storage
solution that is based on an industry 3U modular design. Up to 16 disk
drives can be supported on a QSS-3000 Cabinet and up to 13 cabinets in a
RACK. The QSS-3000 Series supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6 and 0+1, as
well as JBOD with up to 32GB of cache to enhance performance.
Flexibility
There is
an increasing demand for easy to use, cost effective storage in the
growing ¡°open systems¡± environment. The ¡°open systems¡± market is growing
at a very rapid rate. With this growth, many of these systems are
running more critical business applications. The criticality of the data
running on these environments requires data protection. The QSS-3000
Series addresses these demands on many of today¡¯s leading client/server
systems.
The
QSS-3000 Series includes an easy to use menu driven interface to set-up
the server and to monitor its operations. The monitor and set-up can be
run using a Windows bases computer. The QSS-3000 offers the flexibility
to configure multiple redundancy groups per system and can even have
JBOD disks in the same server. All these capabilities allow the customer
complete flexibility in setting up their data storage needs, with the
convenience of selecting from an easy to use menu.
The modular design of the QSS-3000 Series also provides
the customer the flexibility of ordering only the storage they require
when their needs dictate. The modular design of the components in the
QSS-3000 allows the customer the ability to replace failed components
easily.
Scalability
The
QSS-3000 can scale to a maximum of 16 drives in each cabinet. Drive
capacity is never lost if redundancy features such as power supplies are
added. 500GB, 750GB and 1000GB disks are the current drive capacities
available in the QSS-3000 Series.
A maximum
13 QSS-3000 cabinets can be concatenated into a QSS-3000 Rack. The
QSS-3000 system with the single host attach controller can scale up to
208 disk drives or 208TB in a single rack.
The
QSS-3000 uses 1, 2 or 4GB Single Inline Memory Module (SIMMs) for cache,
allowing a maximum of 32GB of cache memory per system. This provides
the ability to configure the QSS-3000 system to optimize for the best
combination of price and performance.
The
QSS-3000 supports iSCSI or Fibre Channel host connection. With up to 16
ports Giga-bit or 4Gb Fibre Channel, the QSS-3000 can be shared for
multiple hosts in the Enterprise network.
Concurrent
Support of Multiple RAID levels
The
QSS-3000 concurrently supports RAID Levels 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10 as
recognized by the RAID Advisory Board, in addition to JBOD
configurations. This allows the System Administrator to allocate JBOD
disk capacity as conventional storage, for application data that does
not require redundancy. It also allows the configuration of different
RAID levels to achieve the optimum level of performance and protection
for various applications.
¡¤
RAID 0 (striping) - used when performance is more
critical than redundancy.
¡¤
RAID 1 (mirroring) - used when high data availability and
consistent performance is required.
¡¤
RAID 5 (independent access rotating parity ) - high
availability used for the smaller block random access files found in
read-intensive on-line transaction processing applications, since the
parity is spread across multiple drives.
¡¤
RAID 6 (dual parity sets) - an extension of RAID 5 but
uses a second, independent distributed parity scheme. Data is striped on
a block level across a set of drives, and then a second set of parity is
calculated and written across all of the drives.
¡¤
RAID 0+1 (mirroring and striping) - provides the maximum
performance in a redundant disk array by combining data striping (RAID
0) with mirroring (RAID 1).
¡¤
Just a Bunch of Disk (JBOD) - SCSI disk storage without
protection.
Data
Protection, Redundancy and Reliability
The
QSS-3000 has several key design features that make this new data module
an ideal product for customers looking for greater data availability and
data protection. The active mechanical components such as disk drives,
cooling fans and power supplies are all CRUs. A redundant cooling fan
CRU is standard on all QSS-3000 systems and N+1 power supply can be
added for greater availability. The power supplies are load sharing to
provide greater reliability (because they run at reduced rates of
output).
Performance
The
QSS-3000 incorporates a high speed Intel dual-core or quad-core CPU and
up to 32GB cache memory increases the read/write performance. The
QSS-3000 uses QBIVOS which is Qbisys Storage framework as its
controller. QBIVOS uses several techniques to streamline write
operations and significantly improve performance. All of the techniques
use the controller¡¯s on board cache.
Write-back caching is incorporated into the QSS-3000 controller. When
the host sends data to be written to a redundancy group, the controller
stores the data in cache and immediately reports to the host its
completion of the write. The controller then writes the data to the disk
drives at a time when the write can be done most efficiently.
Write
Gathering is another performance enhancement available on the QSS-3000
controller. The QSS-3000 system will attempt to consolidate multiple
writes destined for contiguous blocks and then write the entire data
block in one operation. The controller stores the data in cache until it
performs the write. The consolidation of multiple small writes can
reduce the number of read/write operation that must take place in a
parity RAID environment (like RAID 5 and 6).
